Alderweireld has been a rock at the back for Spurs since his 2015 arrival in north London.
The Belgian has helped Mauricio Pochettino turn Tottenham into top-four regulars and Champions League finalists last season.
But his time at the club could soon be over – and a nightmare switch across the capital is even on the cards.
Spurs are powerless to keep Alderweireld this summer due to a £25m release clause in his contract.
Any rival club who offer that fee will be able to speak to the defender about the switch.
It appears one such club keen to do so is Arsenal – and Alderweireld is said to be open to the idea.
Football operations and communications consultant Ian McGarry spoke revealed the news on the Transfer Window podcast this week.
“You’re not going to like to hear this, Spurs fans, but one of the clubs who have expressed an interest is north London rivals Arsenal,” he said.
“Alderweireld is very tempted to look at a career where he doesn’t need to uproot his family”
“This is a move that suits Arsenal. We know they need defenders, it’s clear their defensive line-up is poor and is not fit for purpose for challenging on any platform whether in Europe or domestically.
“My understanding is the information coming out of Arsenal is this is not a mischievous bid for Alderweireld, they are serious about it.
“Alderweireld himself is aware of the interest of Arsenal, and of course if they meet that release clause, Spurs are duty bound and have no reason to stop the Belgian international from speaking to Arsenal.”
McGarry added: “Alderweireld is very tempted to look at a career where he doesn’t need to uproot his family, his life, because obviously these training grounds are quite close to each other, and therefore moving to the Emirates would in one way be quite an ‘easy’ thing to do.
“It would not be easy in what Spurs fans would think about that, but I think it’s something that makes sense for Arsenal given their transfer budget is less than €50m (£45m) all-in.”
