Arsenal are interested in Crystal Palace flier Wilfried Zaha, according to Sky Sports News, and the player himself wants to leave.
The big issue is finances. Do Arsenal have more money than they’re letting on? There must be reserves there, it’s just whether the board want to spend it this summer.
But with that saga set to run and run while the Gunners negotiate, Unai Emery must examine the options he already has at his disposal.
Among them is Reiss Nelson, who told the Times last month that he is ‘Arsenal through and through’ but spent last season out on loan at Hoffenheim.
Nelson did not set the world alight in the Bundesliga like Jadon Sancho – but German football isn’t a magic bullet for success for English players.
He had to work hard, adapt and get used to playing football every week that matters. Forcing his way into a senior squad rather than being in the age group side week in, week out on talent alone.
Those lessons will stand him in good stead and Arsenal are in dire need of a winger with his speed, creativity and passion for the club.
Even if Zaha comes in, Arsenal will still need speed on the other flank and Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are more number tens.
Arsenal cannot afford to let Nelson leave on loan again this season, nor stagnate with another season of age group football. He can make a difference in 2019/20, whether or not Zaha comes.
