William Saliba has been included in Arsenal’s squad for the season ahead, despite currently playing his football in France.
The central defender was signed by the Gunners in July before he was loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the season ahead.
But Saliba has been included in Arsenal’s 49-man squad for the current campaign.
This unusual move has been explained by ‘Saved by the Bellerin’ co-host Dean, who explained the club are trying to speed up the arrival of his homegrown status.
“Arsenal have named William Saliba in their 49 man squad for the season despite him being loaned back to ASSE,” he tweeted.
“This is a very smart move by Sanllehí & Co which will basically mean Saliba will become a HG player should he continue to be registered for the next two seasons.”
Saliba is currently on the sidelines after a picking up an injury in France.
The 18-year-old impressed greatly playing for the Ligue 1 club last season, prompting a lot of interest from clubs across Europe.
Saliba revealed after signing for Arsenal that fellow countryman Matteo Guendouzi played a big role in his switch.
“I spoke to Matteo,” he said upon arrival in north London.
“I even bumped into him at a funfair in Paris, and that’s where I told him that Arsenal wanted to sign me!
“He gently advised me to come here and explained what it was like.
“The history, the badge… since I was little, I’ve been watching Arsenal play in the Champions League and so on, and there are a lot of French players who have come through here.
“So that really helped me to make my mind up.”
Arsenal have enjoyed a mixed start to the season, beating Newcastle and Burnley before losing to Liverpool and drawing 2-2 with Tottenham.
