Arsenal will be hoping to bounce back from defeat against Liverpool last time out with a win over bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Arsenal fans will certainly want to see Unai Emery’s side go all out for victory. The Gunners boast enough attacking talent in their squad to threaten Spurs. The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe have the capacity to trouble the visitors’ defence.
Another option who Emery may turn to is Mesut Ozil. The German is yet to play for Arsenal this season but is approaching full fitness. Even then, though, it is unclear where he stands in Emery’s plans. The Spanish coach has often dropped the 30-year-old for big games.
However, Emery is keen to stress that the No. 10 may still fight his way back into the starting XI on a regular basis. As quoted by The Mirror, the manager said, “we need him – and him firstly to be consistent in training, to be available in each match…We need him to be available and he can help us with his quality”.
Emery may be sending a message to Ozil here by instructing him to show greater consistency in training. If the playmaker is underperforming on the training pitch then he stands little chance of starting regularly in the Premier League.
However, Emery is clear that there is still a place for Ozil at Arsenal. There has been plenty of speculation about his future, but the Spaniard has made it plain that he still believes Ozil can play a role for the Gunners. Certainly, Ozil is supremely talented, but he hasn’t been at his best for a long time now.
It is unlikely that Ozil will ever get back to his peak form. Despite what Emery says, the club will likely be keen to move Ozil, and his £350,000-a-week wage package (Spotrac), out of the club as soon as possible.
