‘Time to move on’, ‘goldfish memory’: Some Arsenal fans back their player after £12m man’s display

Aston Villa were put to the sword by an excellent Leeds United performance last night. Patrick Bamford scored a hat-trick to take the gloss off Dean Smith’s side’s perfect start to the new season.

But it was a game which, for some reason, had Arsenal fans talking.

This summer saw Arsenal in a tough position regarding their goalkeepers.

Emi Martinez had thrived in place of an injured Bernd Leno toward the end of last season and that left Mikel Arteta with a tough situation to navigate.

In the end, the Argentine was moved on, joining Aston Villa for a reported (Express and Star) £20 million and he has had an impressive start to life at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Leno has had an indifferent season so far, recently confounded by a blatant error in the Rapid Vienna clash.

A debate has been raging among Arsenal fans whether the club might have sold the wrong keeper but following Martinez’s display against Leeds, some fans were quick to use the performance as a means to defend their current number one.

Why is unclear, when, despite a harsh criticism being Martinez could have pushed Rodrigo’s effort further away before Bamford scrambled the opening goal, there was little the former Arsenal stopper could have done about any of the Leeds strikers three goals.

But it is at least good to see that some Arsenal fans are doing everything they can to back the German stopper, who was having an excellent season in 2019-20 until Neal Maupay’s challenge forced him to the treatment table.

However, the hope going forward will be that Arsenal fans simply back Leno, and wish Martinez all the best in his new venture.
