The three problems that Arsenal boss Unai Emery is failing to address at the club

Arsenal boss Unai Emery still has questions marks hanging over him at the club because the same problems are being highlighted time and time again.

That is the view of ESPN FC pundit Shaka Hislop, who believes Arsenal’s Premier League defeat to Liverpool shows not enough improvement was made in the summer.

Hislop reckons that more needed to be done to address the defensive problems at the club, while he has also questioned the tactics employed by Emery in some games.

He also thinks that Alexandre Lacazette needs to start playing in the big games after only coming on against Liverpool with a few minutes remaining.

The Gunners smashed their record transfer fee by paying Lille £72m for Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe in the summer, while the likes of left-back Kieran Tierney and midfielder Dani Ceballos joined from Celtic and Real Madrid respectively.

Brazilian centre-back David Luiz also arrived on transfer deadline day from Chelsea in a bid to help shore up the defence this season.

But he was guilty of two big mistakes in the 3-1 loss to Liverpool on Saturday and he does not look like improving the team that much.

Hislop was surprised at Emery’s team selection and tactics in the Premier League clash at Anfield and he says the loss reinforces the opinion Arsenal’s defence is not quite good enough.

Therefore he thinks that Tottenham are probably the frontrunners to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool this season.

And he says that he still does not understand some of the decisions being made by Emery.

“You look at the chasing pack and we’re still left scratching our heads a little bit as to who will emerge at the top of that chasing pack,” former West Ham goalkeeper Hislop said.

“Despite the result I think Spurs are best equipped to do that.

“I think there are huge questions around Arsenal, we saw that [against Liverpool].

“We knew Arsenal’s problems coming into this season and I’m not sure Unai Emery necessarily addressed them all.

“Nicolas Pepe coming in I thought was a good acquisition and gives them an option to play three up front.

“Yet somehow every time Arsenal play these big games [Alexandre] Lacazette finds himself left out.

“I don’t understand that thinking, nor do I understand the tactics employed by Unai Emery, nor do I understand why he didn’t address some of those defensive woes earlier on in the transfer window.

“David Luiz clearly at fault for two of those goals [against Liverpool].”
