Arsenal will be disappointed after finishing fifth in the Premier League and losing to Chelsea in the Europa League final.
It means it is another year without Champions League football at the Emirates which has seriously hampered their transfer efforts.
Reports have revealed that the Gunners have a summer warchest of just £45m but Unai Emery is desperate to strengthen several positions.
The Spaniard has demanded a centre-back, a left-back, an Aaron Ramsey replacement and a wide forward – with the latter proving most difficult.
A number of targets have been mooted including Yannick Carrasco, Ryan Fraser and Yacine Brahimi but top of the wish list is Zaha of Crystal Palace.
But the Eagles are not happy to let him go, slapping a huge £90m price-tag on the Ivorian.
And while this is clearly out of Arsenal’s budget, this could be the perfect opportunity to shift on some deadwood at the club.
After Palace let Aaron Wan-Bissaka go to United for £50m, they are looking short at full-back.
Joel Ward and Martin Kelly are their only options, so Arsenal could help out by chucking Carl Jenkinson in with the Zaha deal.
The former Charlton ace has no future in north London and is wasting his career there, so a move to Selhurst Park would be good for all parties involved.
As well as Jenkinson, Emery could throw Henrikh Mkhitaryan in with the deal – as the Armenian has failed to win plaudits from his manager.
The former Manchester United man would help Palace in the short-term over a replacement for Zaha.
Though it is yet to be seen whether or not the 30-year-old would drop down to such a level having played at the top for such a long time.
Another star that can be used to sweeten the deal could be Reiss Nelson – though only on loan.
The 19-year-old was brilliant in flashes at Hoffenheim last season and is desperate to prove himself to Emery.
A slot in this year’s first-team at the Emirates might be a step too far and a well-worked Premier League loan could be exactly what the London-born winger needs to kickstart his career.
