The best and worst possible Europa League picks for Man Utd and Arsenal

Manchester United, Arsenal, Wolves, Celtic and Rangers will find out who they face in the Europa League group stages on Friday afternoon.

It may be Europe’s second major competition behind the Champions League but there’s still plenty of teams to fear.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at the best and worst possible draws for the English and Scottish sides.

WORST CASE

Arsenal and Manchester United lie in pot 1 so fortunately will avoid some of the biggest names in the competition like Sevilla, Roma and Porto.

However, there are still some sides they won’t want to see in placed in their group on Friday.

In pot 2 both United and Arsenal will hope to evade Borussia Monchengladbach, PSV Eindhoven and Celtic.

Monchengladbach have spent well this summer and will be a dangerous side in this season’s competition.

For as good a side as Ajax were last season, only three points separated them and PSV in the Eredivisie standings. They may have lost Luuk De Jong, but the Dutch side will be a difficult night’s work for most teams.

Celtic failed to get through to the Champions League but there’s something special about European nights at Celtic Park and few will be happy to have to go there in the groups. Plus the English-Scottish rivalry will serve as extra motivation to them.

Saying that, Celtic would ideally prefer one of the weaker sides in pot 1. United and Arsenal would be a tasty draw but again, no walk in the park for them either. They’d probably be better off avoiding each other entirely.

FOR WOLVES AND RANGERS

Sevilla

PSV Eindhoven

Wolves

Rangers

In pot 3, United, Arsenal and Celtic will hope to miss out on Saint-Etienne and Feyernoord, who are the strongest two sides in that pot.

Qarabag would also be a team they would like to avoid, unless they’d like travelling five and a half hours back from Azerbaijan on a Thursday night.

Wolves also lie in their pot, but cannot be drawn against either Arsenal or United. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men will be dark horses to go far in this competition.

A team full of cultured and talented players, they proved they can mix it in Europe by knocking out a very capable Torino side in the qualifying round. Celtic will not want to be pitted against them.

In pot 4, the only thing to fear is the unknown. Rangers will be the only side United, Arsenal and Wolves will be keen to evade.

Steve Gerrard’s men will struggle to get a favourable draw given they are in pot 4 and will want to avoid all the English sides as well and the above mentioned teams.

BEST CASE

United and Arsenal will expect to get past the first hurdle relatively easily no matter what group they are given.

But this competition has historically been a playground to blood young talent and they will want to feel comfortable enough to hand out as many opportunities as they can without the risk of it blowing up in their face.

There are several teams in pot 2 United and Arsenal will be keen to face. Perhaps the easiest task of them all would be Astana, the Kazakhstan champions.

Although they are already well into their domestic season, Astana are certainly one of the weakest sides in the pot.

They have failed to get through the qualifying rounds to the Champions League for the past four seasons and last year couldn’t even get out of their Europa League group. Astana are also second in the Kazakhstan league at the moment. Failing that, they’ll want to draw Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

In pot 3, United and Arsenal will hope to draw Rosenborg, who were well beaten in their Champions League qualifier by Dinamo Zagreb and currently sit fourth in the Norwegian top-flight.

While Celtic and Rangers will have their fingers crossed for Basle in pot 1. Once the dominant force in Switzerland, Basle have diminished into playing second-fiddle behind Young Boys.

Both Celtic and Rangers should have enough about them to get past Basle without any trouble. They will both equally want to draw Rosenborg in pot 3.

Wolves will hope for Astana and Basle in their group while there is plenty of scope to strike lucky in pot 4.

Perhaps the best team to draw would be Dudelange. The Luxembourg side only play in front of a crowd no bigger than 2,500 – less than Cheltenham Town’s average attendance – and only secured their place in this competition by beating a side who were only founded two years ago on penalties.
