Gabriel Martinelli has told Arsenal’s official website that it was incredible when he learned that the Gunners were interested in him ahead of the summer.
Martinelli arrived at the Emirates earlier in the year after Arsenal reportedly saw off 25 competitors for his signature – as reported by Yahoo Esportes.
He has already caught the eye during his time with Unai Emery’s men. Martinelli has scored four goals in five appearances for the club. His record is all more remarkable given that he is still awaiting his first Premier League start for the club.
He may however, get the chance to start against Vitoria in the Europa League on Thursday. And ahead of the game, Martinelli shed some light on the events that led up to the Brazilian signing for Arsenal.
“My agent always calls me before a match to wish me luck, have a little chat, that sort of thing. One day, out of the blue, he told me that Arsenal had contacted him and were watching me,” he told the club’s official website.
“I remember being so happy. It was not only my dream but also my family’s. I’d always worked so hard to make the next step in my career, so to be told that Arsenal wanted to bring me to England to play in the Premier League… that was incredible.”
The Gunners’ move for Martinelli already looks to have the potential to be a masterstroke. He has scored a wide range of goals already. And he has the potential to play in a variety of positions.
It looks to be a matter of time before he makes that first league start. It would certainly be no surprise if he stakes a further claim to Emery on Thursday.
