According to Noticias de Gipuzkoa, Real Sociedad are close to securing the services of Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal.
The defender is apparently open to the move, which would mark his return to La Liga. The Spaniard last plied his trade in his home country for Malaga before joining the Gunners in 2013.
The 33-year-old has since gone on to establish himself as a consistent and reliable option for the north London club. The 22-cap Spain international has made 250 appearances for the Gunners, scoring ten goals and registering 20 assists. He has captained Arsenal on several occasions and has won three FA Cups in his time at the Emirates Stadium.
However, his time with Arsenal now looks close to an end. As one of the club’s most impressive defenders in recent years he will surely be missed. However, age is beginning to catch up with him and the Premier League outfit are running out of time to cash in on the full-back considering his current contract is set to expire at the end of the season. The summer signing of Kieran Tierney has also pushed him down the pecking order in Unai Emery’s squad.
Following the emergence of the aforementioned report, plenty of Arsenal fans took to Twitter to react to the prospect of Monreal’s potentially imminent departure.
Apparently, Monreal may depart in the coming days. His best days are behind him, but he’s been a fantastic servant. A model professional off the pitch who was incredibly consistent during his prime. His goals vs Utd/City were crucial in our FA Cup triumphs too. Thank you, Nacho!

It will not be good for us if he leaves now that we need him. We can’t rely on Kolasinac and Tierney won’t be back atleast untill mid October. Let him stay for this season.

Think this would be a mistake, hasn’t put a foot wrong in the first two weeks, so many games other than PL before Jan, can play CB or LB, important for him to stay

I have great affection for Nacho. He’s been a steady performer at full back and scored crucial goals, even deputising as a centre back. Our most consistent FB since Sagna. Even more important when you consider the turbulence in our defence in that time. Thanks Nacho!
