Chris Sutton has told BBC Sport that he thinks something is going on behind the scenes at Arsenal in regards to Mesut Ozil’s situation, as he was left out of the side that lost to Sheffield United on Monday night.
The Gunners looked fruitless in the final third as newly-promoted Sheffield United earned a 1-0 win over Unai Emery’s side, thanks to a superb defensive display from the likes of John Egan. Lys Mousset scored the only goal of the game.
Ozil, 31, was not even included on the Arsenal bench and the 92-time Germany international has only managed two appearances all season. He played in the 2-2 draw against Watford, and the 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest.
The playmaker is renowned to be earning as much as £350,000 a week at The Emirates. That contract ends in the summer of 2021, and Sutton cannot believe that Ozil is being left out – claiming something must be amiss out of the public eye.
“I don’t care how much Mesut Ozil is paid, the main thing is how he’s is performing on the pitch in an Arsenal shirt – and he’s not,” Sutton said. “We aren’t party to how Arsenal train or what’s goes on but if Ozil was doing that well.
“Unai Emery would know what impact he would have on the team, so he would play him, because he wants to win games and improve. There must be something amiss and it looks Ozil will have to sort this situation out himself.
“Arsenal have either got to ship him out and just bite the bullet, or they’ve got to get him back playing in the side, but it’s been down to their own doing and I feel they’ve caused their own problems.”
TBR’s view – So, do Arsenal ‘ship him out’ or bring him back?
Realistically, Ozil’s wages are going to scupper a permanent move elsewhere unless Arsenal subsidise his wages going forward. Even if he went on loan, Arsenal would have to pay the majority of his pay cheque.
So if Arsenal are going to have to pay through the nose until his contract does finally end in 2021, surely they should give him a chance in the team again? The pressure is enormous on Ozil, but on Monday night, they missed his creativity.
Arsenal fans want to see Ozil, Ozil will surely want to be playing. With Arsenal having to pay whether happens, surely they need to bring him back into the side.
