Shkodran Mustafi has hit back at Emmanuel Petit after the Arsenal legend’s “irrational” criticism of the German defender.

The Arsenal defender has been made something of a scapegoat for the north London outfit’s defensive problems over the past couple of seasons.

Mustafi made a solid start to his Arsenal career in the 2016-17 season but the Germany international has fallen out of favour under Unai Emery.

The former Everton star hasn’t made a Premier League appearance in the current campaign to highlight his ailing Arsenal career.

Petit was critical of Mustafi after the Gunners defender conceded a penalty in the north London derby last season.

The Premier League winner even went as far as to call Mustafi the “king of blunders” following the error.

Mustafi, though, has hit back at the World Cup winner for his comments, highlight his disappointment that an ex-player would show such a lack of compassion.

“That annoyed me a lot,” Mustafi is quoted as saying by talkSPORT. “It’s one thing when fans or media criticise you.

“But it’s a different story when an ex-player who knows how hard it sometimes is in the field says so.

“I expect such players to be more sensitive and realise what this sharply worded critique can trigger.

“In the past, that might have been one day in the paper and then people would have forgotten it.

“Today it’s on the internet and will haunt me for the rest of my career.

“Actually, former players like Petit should not have to make a name for themselves by making condescending comments about current players.”

Mustafi is in a battle to save his Arsenal career after falling behind David Luiz, Sokratis Papastathopolous and Rob Holding in the pecking order at the north London side.

The Gunners are in third place in the Premier League table and a point adrift of defending champions Manchester City.

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
