Robert Pires has hailed Matteo Guendouzi as a “warrior” after his impressive contribution in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.
The 20-year-old showed experience beyond his years to help Arsenal find a way back into the derby clash after defensive mistakes handed Tottenham a 2-0 lead inside 40 minutes.
Alexandre Lacazette halved the deficit in added time at the end of the first half before Guendouzi’s brilliant cross teed up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to level the derby clash.
Guendouzi’s performances haven’t gone unnoticed at the top level after France manager Didier Deschamps called up the Arsenal youngster as Paul Pogba’s replacement for the international break.
Former Arsenal and France midfielder Pires heaped praise on Guendouzi for his impressive performances in the Gunners team.
“Matteo is a warrior,” Pires told The Athletic, as quoted by Metro. “He had a fantastic match.
“He’s a combative player and what I like about him is that he is consistent with that.
“He does his job, patrolling defensive midfield, winning the ball, tackling well, and then playing the ball quickly and simply.
“That’s why he is an important player for Unai and for Arsenal. I liked the reaction of the team to going 2-0 down, the manner of the response.”
Arsenal signed Guendouzi in a £9m deal from Ligue 1 side Lorient in the summer transfer window.
The French midfielder has scored one goal in 52 appearances in all competitions since his switch to the Gunners.
Arsenal have collected seven points from their opening four Premier League games to make a decent start to the new season.
The Gunners have beaten Newcastle United and Burnley but Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat by Liverpool FC at Anfield last month.
Unai Emery signed six new players in the summer transfer window.
