Rob Holding to feature for Arsenal Under-23s as Unai Emery pencils in Premier League return

Arsenal defender Rob Holding is set to feature for the club’s Under-23 side tomorrow night as he edges closer to a long-awaited return from injury.

The 23-year-old has been out of action since picking up a knee problem against Manchester United on December 5.

That came as a huge blow to Gunners boss Unai Emery, who arguably lost his leading central defender for the remainder of the season.

Arsenal did not lose a single one of the 16 games he played before sustaining his injury at Old Trafford.

But Emery will be delighted to hear that Holding is now set to take the final step of his rehabilitation from a eight-month spell on the sidelines.

According to the Daily Mail, the England Under-21 ace is pencilled in to play a full 90 minutes in the Under-23’s clash with Everton tomorrow evening.

If he comes through that match unscathed, he could be available for Arsenal’s meeting with Watford on September 15 after the international break.

Holding enjoyed a 60-minute run out for the Gunners’ Under-23 side in a defeat against Blackburn on August 12.

Yet tomorrow’s 90 minutes will prove a greater indicator of his readiness to return for the first team.

After making just 30 appearances for Bolton, Holding completed a £2m move to Arsenal in the summer of 2016.

He only featured 18 times in his debut season under Arsene Wenger, nevertheless, with half of those appearances coming in the Premier League and five coming in their successful FA Cup campaign.

However, the centre-half ran out 26 times for the Gunners in 2017/18 and then became a key player for Emery in his first season at the Emirates.
