Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal is on the verge of leaving. According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Real Sociedad have reached an agreement to sign the player for two seasons with an option of an extra 12 months.
Monreal played in Arsenal’s 3-1 loss at Liverpool on Saturday evening. But this could be his last outing as an Arsenal player. The Spaniard could be set to return to his home country.
The former Osasuna and Malaga defender has been out of Spain since his 2012 move to Arsenal. In seven years with the North London club, he has racked up more than 250 appearances in total.
However, his time at Arsenal is coming to an end. The 33-year-old, who has earned 22 caps for Spain, is close to sealing his return to La Liga. With an agreement reportedly in place with Sociedad, it should only be a matter of time before things are official.
Arsenal have moved on from Monreal. Now is the right time to part ways with the veteran defender and move onto the next era. Unai Emery has prepared for this by signing Kieran Tierney to scrap it out with Sead Kolasinac for the starting spot.
Monreal has been an excellent servant for Arsenal over the years but the club need to move forward. In Tierney, they have one of the most exciting young full-backs in the league.
