Report claims that Arsenal only sold 36-cap international due to staggering bid

Arsenal were extremely active in the summer transfer market with some of their business surprising outsiders to the Emirates Stadium.

Dani Ceballos, Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz were all added to the Arsenal ranks, with Unai Emery now ready for an assault on reaching the Champions League.

Due to the excessive spending, the Gunners have been forced to offload some player to balance the books.

Among the departures were Petr Cech, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Danny Welbeck, Laurent Koscielny, Carl Jenkinson, Nacho Monreal and Mohamed Elneny.

One of the more surprising players to be sold, however, was Alex Iwobi.

The Nigerian international went to Everton for £40 million (Football London).

It has emerged in a report from Football London that Arsenal weren’t overly keen on selling Iwobi.

The report states that the club thought a deal worth up to £40 million to the Gunners was too much to consider turning down.

Iwobi was a product of Arsenal’s youth academy. In 149 appearances for the first-team, he scored 15 goals and registered 27 assists.

Good start

A move to Everton does work out well for all parties though.

For starters, Iwobi will play far more football at Goodison Park than he would have done at the Emirates. The addition of Nicolas Pepe would have severely hampered his chances of game time had he stayed at the club.

Arsenal are massive beneficiaries as they received £40 million for a player who to be fair didn’t set the world alight during his time at the club.

The with 36 caps for his county has made a strong start at his new club, scoring two goals in his first three games.

It might now have come out that Iwobi wasn’t intended to be sold, but in the long run, Arsenal will look back at this as an exceptional piece of business for the football club.
