Arsenal are in pole position to land Villarreal defender Pau Torres, according to a report by 90min.
Chelsea and Manchester City are also keen on the young central defender, who recently earned his first Spain call-up. But Arsenal are leading the way after ex-midfielder Santi Cazorla recommended Torres.
The 22-year-old currently plays for Villarreal in Spain’s top division. After spending last season on loan at Malaga, he has stepped up and played eight La Liga games this season.
Standing at 6ft 4in tall, Torres is a dominant and powerful centre-back. He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet and he is left-footed – which is an added bonus for Unai Emery’s men.
Torres’ fine form this season prompted Roberto Moreno to call him up to the Spain squad for the first time during the October international break. However, the Spain U21 starlet is yet to make his full debut for his country.
Arsenal will need to spend big money to sign Torres, though. He recently signed a new five-year deal and he has a release clause of between €50m and €75m – meaning Arsenal might have to pay up to £65m for their man.
Torres appears to be everything Arsenal need. He is dominant in the air, comfortable on the ball, strong in the tackle and still very young. With more game time, Torres is going to become even better.
Arsenal have had their problems with a leaky defence this season. But with Rob Holding returning from injury, William Saliba coming in next year and Torres potentially signing up, the Gunners could enter a new era of defensive solidity.
