Arsenal reportedly attempted to lure Real Madrid starlet Vinicius Junior to the Emirates Stadium earlier this summer.
According to the generally reliable UOL Esporte, the Gunners were one of two clubs attentive to the Brazilian’s situation – the other being Paris Saint-Germain.
New technical director Edu supposedly sought out the 19-year-old, but the approach was immediately rebuffed by the Spanish giants.
They insisted he wasn’t for sale despite the marquee signing of Eden Hazard from Chelsea.
Arsenal then, of course, went on to snap up the more experienced Nicolas Pepe from Lille for a reported fee of £72 million (BBC Sport).
Vinicius has made three appearances for Madrid so far this season, including one start in the first game against Celta Vigo.
Arsenal fans are surely pleased with the signing of Pepe, but it would have been interesting to see how many would have preferred Vinicius instead if the media had reported on the supposed enquiry at the time.
Vinicius is obviously very raw but is an amazingly talented winger with a huge future in the game.
The deal for Pepe was negotiated brilliantly by Raul Sanllehi, and fans surely cannot have any regrets. The Ivorian is a huge talent will surely start banging in the goals once he gets a feel for the Premier League.
