Arsenal have made RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano their second choice central defensive target this summer, according to the Daily Star.
They report that Barcelona’s French international stopper Samuel Umtiti is the Gunner’s top target but Unai Emery is acutely aware that he would swallow up a large chunk of his transfer budget.
That’s apparently why highly-rated 20-year-old Upamecano has been eyed as a backup option and the Gunners watched him play for France’s under-21 side against Belgium on Monday.
The report goes on to say that the defender has a new contract offer on the table from Leipzig, but he is stalling on signing it as he waits to see what the summer holds.
The issue for Arsenal now that they haven’t qualified for the Champions League is that Emery doesn’t have a bumper budget with which to attract top talent such as Umtiti.
It would be a huge gamble to blow a vast sum on the defender – even though he’s a World Cup winner – because of his injury record.
A younger man like Upamecano may not get fans as excited initially, but the Gunners picking up young talent and growing them into stars is their most likely route back to the top at this stage.
