Mesut Ozil is prepared to forgo some of the money that is set to be paid to him over the coming months as Arsenal look to negotiate his exit this month, according to a report from The Athletic.
Ozil’s future has been an issue for Mikel Arteta for much of his tenure. He has not played since the latter stages of last term and was left out of their Premier League and Europa League squads this season.
As noted by The Athletic, his contract expires in the summer. And with Arteta not planning to reintroduce him to the fold, Ozil is now open to leaving the club this month.
The problem for Arsenal however, is the 32-year-old’s wages. According to The Athletic, he is on around £350,000-a-week. In total, he looks set to earn another £7 million should he stay until the summer.
However, the report claims that he is willing to agree an exit this month that involves a smaller fee.
TBR View: Glimmer of light for Arsenal
It is incredibly frustrating to see Ozil stick around. Of course, you can understand why some are defending the former Germany international and his right to see out his contract.
But it could make a big difference to many at Arsenal if Ozil did leave for less than £7 million. And for Ozil, a move this month could allow him to remind everyone of what a fantastic footballer he can be.
The encouraging news for all parties is that an agreement may have just moved a step closer.
