Report: Arsenal keen on England international, willing to pay £50m to get him

Arsenal are keen to muscle in on the race for England international Harry Maguire, according to a report by the Sun.

They report that the Gunners have enquired about the Leicester City defender and would be willing to pay £50 million for his services this summer.

But the report also says that the Manchester clubs are both in the hunt, and that the asking price is closer to £85 million from the King Power Stadium.

Arsenal cannot offer Champions League final in the same way that Manchester City can, and will not pay as much as fellow Europa League club Manchester United in order to land the defender.

It seems wildly unlikely that Maguire will be an Arsenal player by the end of the transfer window – he looks bound for Manchester if one of the clubs will match Leicester’s price.

£50 million is perhaps a more realistic valuation, but Leicester know they can get more for him and will hold out for that because they cannot be bullied into selling.

After a low bid for Wilfried Zaha which looks to have annoyed Crystal Palace and set any chance of signing him onto the back foot, this bid is another embarrassment for Arsenal, in truth.

The Gunners must know they’d need to go higher to get Maguire and it seems unlikely they’ll do that having failed to get the Champions League money through the door.
