Report: Arsenal held contract talks with first-teamer before season ended, collapsed over club’s demands

Arsenal’s tried to get Laurent Koscielny to sign a new contract at the Emirates Stadium before the 2018/19 season ended, according to the Sun.

They report that the talks collapsed after the Gunners wanted the club captain to halve his wages from £90,000-a-week to £45,000 – with incentives to top it up based on appearances – and he flatly refused.

There was apparently a two-year deal on the table but Koscielny viewed the offer as a major slap in the face because of his inability to play every week.

That has reportedly created the situation whereby he refused to tour America with his team-mates and is set for a meeting with the club’s lawyers.

The relationship between a club and its captain should be stronger than this, although it is perhaps the protracted nature of what’s going on that’s the issue rather than letting Koscielny go.

Manchester United and Chelsea have both let their captains go on a free this summer. Antonio Valencia seemed fairly content to go, where Gary Cahill told the Telegraph he felt like a ‘ghost’ under Maurizio Sarri.

There’s no reason why the captain departing should derail a club’s pre-season plans, but getting the lawyers involved over the club captain shouldn’t really be happening.

Whatever’s gone on, Koscielny shouldn’t be refusing to tour in order to get out of his contract purely because he was offered a lower wage.
