Report: Arsenal are desperate to keep 59-cap international, planning to offer pay rise

Arsenal are preparing to offer electric hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang an improved contract to ward off interest from China, according to the Evening Standard.

They report that the Gunners are desperate to keep the 59-cap Gabonese hitman away from a big-money move this summer – despite missing out on the Champions League.

Guangzhou Evergrande and Shanghai SIPG are named as the two mega-rich clubs keen on landing Aubameyang, but Arsenal want him tied down as he has just two years left on his current deal.

That contract is apparently worth £190,000 per week but the Gunners are plotting to offer him a pay rise to keep him sweet.

Aubameyang was outstanding for Arsenal last season – finishing joint top of the Premier League scoring charts with 22 goals, alongside Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.

And after years of selling their best players, Arsenal appear determined to keep one of their top stars, despite him approaching 30.

That said, there’s a school of thought that selling an ageing Aubameyang for a bumper fee may allow Unai Emery to reshape a squad that needs improvement all over but could perhaps withstand his departure if Alexandre Lacazette steps into the goalscoring breach.

That’s the big call for Emery this summer as he approaches a transfer window that represents a major opportunity to bend this Arsenal squad to his will.
