Both Arsenal and their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Joachim Andersen this summer. But another European club has made the first concrete offer.
According to The Daily Star, Lyon have launched a £16m bid for Andersen. But Sampdoria value their prized defender at around £31m, meaning Lyon would have to double their offer to sign him.
Lyon finished third in Ligue 1 last season and want to bolster their squad to cut the gap on Paris Saint-Germain. But they face a battle with Arsenal and Tottenham.
Arsenal are desperate to sign a new centre-back this summer. The Gunners showed frailties at the back last season and Unai Emery wants to deploy a back-three.
He is weighing up his options this summer and Andersen is a top target. The Denmark U21 starlet has proven himself in Holland and Italy so Emery wants to try him out in England.
But local rivals Tottenham are also keen. After two windows without any new signings, big things are expected at Spurs this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino has lined up Andersen as speculation rumbles on regarding Toby Alderweireld’s future. Andersen could join Juan Foyth, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in Tottenham’s defensive ranks.
Andersen fits the bill as an exciting young talent to develop. £31m might seem like a steep up-front cost but it could be a shrewd long-term investment if he fulfils his potential.
The 23-year-old has already got good experience in European football. With 49 Eredivisie appearances and 39 Serie A outings to his name, he has the perfect blend of youth and experience.
Standing at 6ft 4in tall, Andersen is a man mountain at the back and his physicality will help him cope with the demands of English football. Moving forwards, Andersen, Foyth and Sanchez could lead Tottenham into a new era. Or alternatively, he could rejuvenate Emery’s Arsenal and get them challenging higher up the league again.
