Carlton Cole has told TalkSPORT (Thursday, 8.15am) that he would take Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil at West Ham United after the Germany star was left out of Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad – despite Arsenal naming only 22 players.
Ozil, who turned 32 earlier this month, has entered the final year of his £350,000-a-week contract. He has failed to play for the Gunners since March, with the belief that the 92-time Germany international is not being played in order to force an exit.
Clubs in Saudi Arabia and Dubai have been linked, but Ozil has remained. Now it is becoming clearer that Ozil is being frozen out because of his lack of work rate, which would see him fail to fit in Mikel Arteta’s high-press style.
Arteta is the future at Arsenal, and Ozil is not – that much is clear. Asked by Jamie O’Hara if he would take Ozil at West Ham, Cole responded by saying “of course”, before saying that Ozil is the kind of “magician-like” player West Ham go for.
“Of course, of course,” Cole said, on Ozil at West Ham. “West Ham have always liked those kind of players, those magician-like players. Arsenal would have benefitted from having him in their squad, but he clearly doesn’t fit in at the moment.”
TBR’s view – Could West Ham really tempt Ozil with a move?
Unless Ozil moves to the middle east or the Chinese Super League, it is clear that he will have to take a pay cut. No club is going to match his wages, let alone half of his £350,000-a-week pay cheque. He has the same agent as Lucas Perez (TransferMarkt).
The Hammers have starred of late under David Moyes, but do lack an in-form number 10 despite Manuel Lanzini’s stunning goal against Tottenham. West Ham would love Ozil, and staying in London may benefit Ozil. But it is very unlikely.
