Arsenal have abruptly sacked their head doctor Zafar Iqbal just days after their Champions League final defeat. Dr Iqbal, 51, is a respected sports medicine practitioner who had been at the club since February 2024. He was summoned to a meeting last Monday and told he would be leaving with immediate effect. It is not clear what formal process was undertaken before the decision. The news comes as a huge surprise to Iqbal and other medical staff. Dr Iqbal was told of the decision by chief executive Richard Garlick. Inside the club, there have been many views on why Arsenal lost key players such as Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber, and Kai Havertz for long periods of the club's Premier League-winning season. Training, team selection, rotation, and medical care have all been considered as to why some have struggled with the workload. Arsenal played 60 games this season, with many players suffering from injuries. The club has commissioned a Spanish physiotherapist, Joaquín Acedo, to look at the club's problematic injury record this season. It is unclear whether Dr Iqbal's sacking has any connection with that review. Mikel Arteta had to contend with a high volume of injuries as he ended Arsenal's 22-year wait for the title.
