The 33-year-old ends a six year spell in North London since joining from Malaga in January 2013, making 251 appearances and contributing 10 goals.
It is believed that Arsenal boss Unai Emery was happy to allow the Spaniard leave, despite being unable to bring in any new additions due to the closure of the transfer window in Britain earlier this month.
Nacho Monreal has left Arsenal in a return to Spain with La Liga side Real Sociedad
Speaking after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool last weekend, Emery said: ‘Some players can leave but we cannot sign another and it depends a little over the next days how we can decide about some circumstances with some players.
‘With Nacho one possibility is open and we are going to speak about that.’
Monreal’s departure leaves Emery confident with the two options he has at left back, Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney, the latter joined Arsenal from Celtic this summer.

Arsenal fans will have fond memories of Monreal’s contributions in North London. During his time at the club, the Spaniard lifted the FA Cup three times, as well as winning three Community Shields and starting last season’s Europa League final.
Monreal has signed a deal with the La Liga side that runs until 30 June 2021.
