Mikel Arteta reveals he and technical director Edu are drawing up Arsenal’s January transfer plans

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and the club’s technical director Edu are drawing up their list of January transfer targets prior to the window opening next month.

The Gunners have made a disappointing start to their Premier League campaign. They are down in 14th place in the table after picking up 13 points from 10 matches – their slowest start to a season since 1981.

Arteta brought in seven new faces to the club during the summer but has been formulating a plan of action with Edu ahead of the winter window.

‘We are planning, talking with Edu and with the club about the things we can do in January,’ Arteta said.

‘But at the moment it’s pretty difficult, unpredictable as well in terms of places we are very restricted in the moment.

‘We’ll see what happens, I think things will move in the market, we will be prepared, we will need to do something knowing the limitations of that market in January and the limitations we have as well to sign players.’

A creative attacking midfielder is likely to be at the top of the agenda in order to improve their struggles in front of goal. Mesut Ozil, the club’s highest-paid player at £350,000 a week, has been axed from Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads and his days at Arsenal appear numbered having not featured since March.

The goal-shy Gunners have found the back of the net just 10 times in 10 Premier League games this season, playing a huge role in their poor start to the season.

Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has received criticism this season after netting just four goals in 12 appearances but Arteta said on Wednesday that Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal have plagued the club ‘for years’
