Michael Owen has told BT Sport that Gabriel Martinelli can only improve with experience after the Arsenal teenager scored another two goals for the Gunners in just his second Arsenal start.
Unai Emery’s side put Standard Liege to the sword and earned a 4-0 win at The Emirates, to go alongside their 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Martinelli netted twice, after doing so against Nottingham Forest last week.
With just three outings under his belt – one being a six-minute appearance against Newcastle – Martinelli has four goals and an assist. He is increasingly looking like a bargain, following his £6million (Telegraph) move from Brazilian side Ituano.
Former England striker Owen was asked how the Brazilian wonderkid could improve, but stated that only experience will help Martinelli progress. He also praised Arsenal’s number 35 for his willingness to drop deep and contribute to play.
“Well, it’s just experience isn’t it,” Owen said, when asked if Martinelli can improve. “He’s got the instinct of a centre-forward. He knows how to link play, he knows how to finish. It’s all about just experience now.
“I don’t mind the way he vacates the dangers zone, either. Some strikers, who are obssessed with goals, and they’ll just stay in between the two posts. He’s prepared to make little runs, I like him.”
TBR’s view – Does Martinelli deserve Premier League chance?
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continues to find the back of the net on a regular basis and without his goals, the Gunners would be in a lowly 19th place in the Premier League. He is crucial.
However, that is not to say Martinelli does not deserve a chance in the Premier League. Still only 18, Emery must use him sparingly in England’s top tier and keep his confidence high. But certainly, Martinelli deserves a go off the bench.
