Man Utd fans may have Thierry Henry to thank for Rashford’s rise to stardom

Marcus Rashford will hope to be Manchester United’s hero against Liverpool on Sunday – but it’s Arsenal legend Thierry Henry he models his game on.

United striker Rashford grew up idolising Henry, who fired 228 goals for the Gunners and is still the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

And he admits he admires the World Cup winner so much that he hangs on Henry’s every word on TV and in interviews.

Rashford said of Henry: “He was someone that I paid close detail to and he is just a wonderful footballer.

“He really knows his football as well, so I still listen to his interviews and the way he speaks about finishing.”

As a forward who prefers to play out on the left where he can exploit space with his pace and technique, Rashford says he learned a lot about his role from watching Henry.

“When I was about 16 or 17, when I first started to play in that No 9 role, Henry was someone that I looked at because he is not a traditional No 9,” the 23-year-old said.

“He is someone that drifts to the left, he does things with the ball – he is just not what you would consider the traditional striker in English football.”

There has been some debate in the past about whether Rashford can play as a centre-forward.

The England ace admits he is not a traditional No9 – but says he knows his strengths and what he brings to United.

And he said watching Henry in action helped convince him of the type of player he wanted to be.

“When I first went into the No 9 position, I knew I could never be that type of traditional No 9 – someone who is going to hold the ball up, win headers and do stuff like that,” he said.

“But I also know the qualities that I do have and what I can do as a striker.

“At the time, he was someone I looked to because I could see similarities with what I wanted my end goal to look like with the way he was playing.”

In eight years with Arsenal, Henry helped fire the Gunners to the league and cup double in 2002, a successful FA Cup defence the season after that, and of course the ‘Invincibles’ title triumph the following campaign.

With United top of the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, Rashford will hope he can inspire his side to similar heights.
