Eddie Nketiah’s hat-trick helped inspire England Under-21s to victory over Austria in Euro 2021 qualifying – and fans of Leeds United and Arsenal could not hide their delight.
Nketiah twice turned in from close range at Stadium MK and also headed home as Aidy Boothroyd’s men sealed a 5-1 win.
The 20-year-old forward is on loan at Leeds this season from Arsenal in a bid to help him gain some much-needed senior experience.
While is yet to become a regular for Marcelo Bielsa’s men in the Championship, he has showed flashes of his brilliance when he has been given the opportunity.
The striker has scored twice in seven Championship matches this term but is yet to start a league game for Bielsa, with all of those appearances coming from the bench.
But he was handed a start for Boothroyd’s Young Lions on Tuesday night and certainly did not disappoint.
After the game, fans of both Leeds and Arsenal took to social media to praise the hat-trick hero.
Many fans of Leeds are calling for Nketiah to be handed a start in this weekend’s game at home to Birmingham.
“Bielsa..take note,” wrote one fan.
“And yet he’ll sit things out for most of Saturday. Ludicrous. Bamford has been very good, but goals win matches,” wrote another.
While one fan said: “He’d score a hat-trick for us if only we’d pick him.”
Arsenal fans think Nketiah’s three-goal haul shows that he is ready to play in the Gunners first team.
“After Laca and Auba there shall be Nketiah and Martinelli. Martketiah,” wrote one Arsenal fan.
“This boy is going to be something else!” said another.
While one fan wrote: “Sell Lacazette, Eddies better than him.”
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown also praised the young striker after England’s win.
Keown told BT Sport: “He makes such good runs. He is always on the move and he’s very intelligent. He sets his body up to find the back of the net.”
Chelsea teenager Callum Hudson-Odoi scored both of England’s other goals, sweeping in a volley and curling home a fabulous second following a fine solo run.
