Keown makes worrying Mikel Arteta comparison, urges Arsenal to ‘keep it simple’

Former England and Arsenal defender, Martin Keown, has claimed that Mikel Arteta needs to avoid making the same mistakes as Unai Emery if the Gunners are to progress.

Arsenal lost 1-0 to Leicester City last night at The Emirates, failing to create many chances of note in the second half following an encouraging opening 45 minutes.

And Keown believes that, while Arteta is the right man for the job, the Spaniard needs to scale things back a bit and give his players time to get used to playing just the one system.

“They keep changing from one system to another and they did this with Emery”, Keown told Stadium Astro (quotes via Goal)

“That’s what I would like to see now, the same pictures, the same triangles, the same movements, the same partnerships, the same relationships. If you keep changing it, you don’t find a rhythm, and that’s something that I found in a very successful team. These players now are getting the ball now and it’s jamming a little bit, so I think keep it simple and start building from this team.”

Arsenal lost David Luiz to an injury last night, meaning Arteta may well once again tinker with his system for their next Premier League game.

Last night’s defeat was a third of the season for the Gunners, following losses against both Liverpool and Man City. It’s also three games without a goal in those defeats, something which will be of concern to Arteta.

The former Arsenal man pulls no punches when he is talking but he is bang on here about Arsenal this season. One minute it’s 4-3-3, the next minute it’s three at the back with wing-backs.

It’s leaving a bit of confusion among the Gunners players, so Keown’s point on making things simple makes sense.

The building blocks are there for Arsenal and Arteta with this squad. But as the losses tot up, their hopes of snatching a Champions League place will eventually slip away.
