Arsenal are desperate to win against their biggest rivals following their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool last week.
Unai Emery named a strong attacking side to battle Spurs at the Emirates, with all three of his best forwards in play.
Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nicolas Pepe are all in action but their biggest woes have been at the back.
Despite heavy pressure in the opening 10 minutes from the Gunners, it was Tottenham who drew first blood through Christian Eriksen.
But it was a goal that could have been easily prevented if not for some dire defending.
Harry Kane first won the flick-on against Granit Xhaka – though Sokratis was also looking to win the ball bizarrely.
It meant the Greek was miles out of position, leaving David Luiz the only centre-back in line but instead of staying with his man, the former Chelsea man charged out of position – leaving acres of space for Erik Lamela to run into.
The problems did not stop there, though, as the Argentine’s shot was lamely saved by Bernd Leno.
The former Leverkusen stopper palmed the ball down low but as he laid on the ground Christian Eriksen stole in to net the opener.
Fans were furious with Luiz for his mistake, who made similar errors in their defeat to Liverpool last week.
On that occasion, he pulled Mohamed Salah’s shirt in the box to give away a penalty and then jumped out of position to allow the Egyptian through on goal.
One fan said: “David Luiz looks in shambles again, midfield getting no pressure on the ball when in defense. In other words, same story with Arsenal all over again.”
Another said: “Sokratis and David Luiz as a centre back pairing together must surely be for a bet. There’s no way a manager at this level can think those two will be good together.”
While this fan tweeted: “No one takes David Luiz out of the play better, or more consistently than David Luiz”
As the Gunners grew back into the game, Spurs won a penalty through a moment of madness from Xhaka.
The Swiss international chopped down Heung-min Son despite him passing the ball out of the box leaving Martin Atkinson no choice.
Kane made no mistake from the spot and Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp slammed Xhaka for the foul.
“Absolute madness from Xhaka,” said Neville, on commentary.
“He does it week in, week out. Season after season. He doesn’t seem to learn.”
“It was a ridiculous tackle to make,” added Redknapp.
