Fabrizio Romano expects Arsenal to have busy January, names two players including one with £22.5m clause

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has told CBS podcast Que Golazo that he is expecting Arsenal to do business in January with an attacking midfielder on the agenda – mentioning Lyon’s Houssem Aouar and Redbull Salzburg talent Dominik Szoboszlai.

Arsenal brought in Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid in the summer, on deadline day to be precise. But they still require a playmaker, one that can knit the midfield to the attack – something which they have seemingly struggled with of late.

Having ostracised Mesut Ozil, Arsenal need a number 10 and Lyon’s Aouar has been constantly linked with a move to the Emirates. A January move could materialise, as could a deal for Salzburg 20-year-old Szoboszlai.

The Hungarian has continued to shine beyond his years, having a hand in 17 goals and scoring twice in the Champions League. Romano expects Arsenal to be busy in January, confirming Szoboszlai has a release clause worth £22.5million (€25million).

“I tell you, I expect something special from Arsenal,” Romano said. “They need a quality midfielder. They need to sign a player like Aouar. Okay, they signed Thomas Partey on deadline day – an amazing transfer, amazing player.

“He is a leader but they need a midfielder that can produce magic. They’re considering Aouar and Szoboszlai. Arsenal and Milan are looking at him, he has a €25m clause. A fantastic opportunity, a fantastic release clause. They will go for someone like this.”

TBR’s view – Which do Arsenal need more, Aouar or Szoboszlai?

Ozil needs replacing. Clearly, he has played his last game for Arsenal – and the Gunners need a replacement, but one that can apply the pressure a lot more than the German veteran. Aouar is perfect, and a player that is at the top of his game.

He is more proven than Szoboszlai – but he will be far more expensive than the Hungarian talent. The latter might be more of a long-term project, though he has shown magic in the Champions League. Both would be top signings, but Aouar just edges it.
