Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has come up with a comical piece of logic which determines he is, in fact, the best stopper ‘in the world and in history.’
Szczesny was reflecting this week on the recent UEFA Player of the Year awards, in which the footballing body awarded the best players in each position on the pitch.
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has joked he is the best ‘keeper in the world
Speaking to Polish publication Przeglad Spotowy while on duty with the national team, Szczesny discussed the time he managed to keep Alisson out of the Roma squad.
‘Recently I said that when I was playing for Roma, currently the best goalkeeper in the world, Alisson, was on the bench.’
Alisson, who once failed second fiddle to Szczesny, won UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year
Legendary keeper Gianluigi Buffon is now on the bench at Juve as Szczesny’s understudy
The ex-Arsenal man then went on to compare it to his current situation at Juventus, where legendary stopper Gianluigi Buffon is on the bench following his return, before turning it into a playful joke.
‘Now at Juve my substitute is one of the greatest players in history.
‘Normal,’ remarked Szczesny when asked how it feels to bench Buffon. ‘I’m kidding, of course.
‘The conclusion is that I’m probably the best in the world and in history!
The Poland No.1 has played both games for Juve this season, as they look to go about once again retaining their Serie A title.
Szczesny added: ‘Seriously, for me, an extra year of learning from Gigi is an invaluable experience and I’m glad he’s back.’
