Emiliano Martinez offered two escape routes from Arsenal as Villarreal join race

Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been offered an escape route from the Emirates with Schalke joining Villarreal in the race to sign him.

The 27-year-old was in goal as the Gunners beat Liverpool on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley on Saturday.

And he impressed last season after standing in for No 1 Bernd Leno, keeping nine clean sheets in 24 games and helping Mikel Arteta’s side win the FA Cup.

But Martinez, who has two years left on his contract, recently admitted he would quit the club if he doesn’t play more games.

And Bundesliga club Schalke are the latest to show interest in the player, who broke into the Argentina squad last season.

Arteta has warned both his goalkeepers that they start from square one this season and will have to compete for a starting spot.

But Martinez wants to be No 1, and that has opened the door for interested clubs to come forward.

Villarreal, currently managed by former Arsenal boss Unai Emery, have also enquired about Martinez.

But it is understood his wage demands are a big potential stumbling block, with the La Liga side also considering a move for Brentford’s David Raya.

Arsenal have not put Martinez on the market but are currently listening to offers for a host of players as they bid to generate cash from sales.
