Unai Emery appears to have offered an intriguing response to reports suggesting that Mesut Ozil could be loaned out in January by insisting, in comments reported by Football London, that he is an Arsenal player for now.
The Daily Mirror reported towards the end of last month that the Gunners are looking to loan the 30-year-old out when the next window opens.
Arsenal reportedly attempted to offload Ozil in the summer, but he was not keen to leave. The Mirror reports that they will have another go when January arrives with Emery only handing the German a peripheral role in his squad this season.
And given the reports, it seems fair to say that Emery’s response to questions about Ozil’s future could have been an interesting one.
“He’s our player now,” he said, as reported by Football London, when asked whether Ozil could leave on loan.
Of course, Emery could have been looking to play down speculation about Ozil’s future. And his answer could be interpreted as emphatic as there is not necessarily a hint that the midfielder’s situation could change.
However, suggesting that he is Arsenal’s player ‘now’ will leave some wondering whether that could indeed only be a temporary situation.
With Ozil barely featuring so far this term, it would be difficult to argue with those who felt more convinced that he will be on his way in January after hearing Emery’s comments.
