Didier Deschamps says Arsenal and France shouldn’t ask too much too soon of promising midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

The 20-year-old has already established himself as a regular in the Arsenal team since Unai Emery signed Guendouzi from Ligue 2 side Lorient in the 2018 summer transfer window.

Guendouzi has been a key part of the Gunners team so far this season, producing a talismanic performance in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.

The French youngster provided the assist for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score a second-half equaliser and seal a point in the derby clash at The Emirates.

Guendouzi’s performances were rewarded by Deschamps, who called up him to the France squad during the international break.

However, the World Cup winner believes that Arsenal and France should temper their expectations so as not to put too much pressure on Guendouzi too soon.

“Do not ask too much, he’s a young player, who is still the Espoirs (under-21) generation, who plays a lot of matches with Arsenal where there is strong competition,” Deschamps told Foot Mercato, as quoted by Metro.

“He’s the modern midfielder, box to box as they say there, with a lot of power and technical quality too. He’s there. What I expect from young people is that they bring this freshness, this dynamism. ‘He is a very young player but with a very big potential.”

Guendouzi featured in 33 games in the Premier League last season, while the French youngster scored one goal in 11 outings in the Europa League.

Arsenal are in fifth place in the Premier League table after collecting seven points from their opening four games.

The Gunners’ only defeat came in a 3-1 loss to Premier League leaders Liverpool FC last month.

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.
