Mexican star Carlos Vela has claimed that Barcelona tried to sign him last winter and he learned of their interest while sipping a pina colada on holiday.
The 30-year-old winger, who plays for Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC, says he was offered a four-month loan deal at the Nou Camp before the 2019 season in America.
Carlos Vela has revealed that Barcelona were interested in taking him on loan last winter
The former Arsenal winger was drinking cocktails on holiday when he heard the news
‘It was really close,’ Vela told BS The Podcast. ‘My second month for holidays, I was there with my pina colada and my agent called me to say ‘look, Barcelona is calling you. They want you to play for four months then you can go back to LA.’
‘I said ‘just say yes, I don’t care about the money or nothing I’m going to start training tomorrow, give me two weeks to be a little bit fit.’
‘Barcelona, Real Madrid… you can’t say no… If it was only my choice, for sure, I’d take it.’
Vela declined to elaborate on the reasons why the Barcelona move didn’t come about but took the opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to LAFC.
Vela is enjoying an excellent season with MLS side Los Angeles FC, with 28 goals to his credit
Vela played for Arsenal between 2005 and 2012, playing 62 times for the Gunners
‘I want to be here for the rest of my career. I’m really happy here, playing in LA. I want to be here,’ he said.
Vela is enjoying an exceptional season in MLS, scoring 28 goals in 28 matches in all competitions and is strong favourite to land the Landon Donovan MLS MVP for 2019.
LAFC, who were only founded four years ago and are in their second MLS season, top the Western Conference by 19 points and have already secured their play-off spot.
