Ajax director of football and former Arsenal forward Marc Overmars has explained what he would do with Mesut Ozil if he was in the power at the Emirates Stadium.
He said: “I am a bit surprised that it is still so quiet around Hakim. He has played better every year and his statistics are exceptionally good. Many clubs are increasingly looking at that.
“Hakim Ziyech is better than Mesut Ozil. I would tell Arsenal; sell him and you will get Hakim for half the price. But they didn’t listen to me. So it could just be that he stays with Ajax.”
Ziyech had an outstanding season for Ajax last time around, as a key player as they stunned Europe and came within a whisker of the Champions League final, knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus en route.
Overmars is perhaps biased towards the qualities of the playmaker, but it’s also not that often that a director of football tells another club to buy one of his team’s players.
Selling Ozil is also easier said than done – his wages are enough to put off most clubs, so getting back twice the price of Ziyech as well as convincing another team to pay his salary would be a major ask.
