‘Been positive’: Emery drops encouraging hint about Arsenal player unseen since September

In comments reported by Football London, Unai Emery has hinted that Alexandre Lacazette could be in contention to play 90 minutes when Arsenal face Sheffield United on Monday.

Lacazette has missed the Gunners’ last seven games in all competitions. Sky Sports reports that he sustained an ankle injury and has only returned to full training on Thursday.

The Frenchman will probably be thankful therefore, that Arsenal have longer to wait for their first fixture after the international break. Emery’s men travel to Bramall Lane at the start of next week.

And Emery has suggested that the door is not entirely shut on the idea of Lacazette playing the entirety of Monday’s game.

“Today was his first session with us and he’s feeling well,” he said, as reported by Football London, when asked about Lacazette. “It depends on how he feels in the next days whether he’ll feature on Monday but it’s been positive.

“I don’t know if he will play 90 minutes or start on the bench.”

Having the 28-year-old back will be a massive boost. He has scored two goals in three Premier League appearances, including one in the North London derby.

Arsenal have actually thrived without the striker. They have won five and drawn two of the seven games they have played. The Gunners are third in the table, and they have made an outstanding start in the Europa League.

Nevertheless, Lacazette’s return will provide Arsenal with a further lift. And Sheffield United may well be hoping that Emery ultimately decides to take a cautious approach with the forward’s return to the side.
