Arsene Wenger explains the lengths Arsenal went to trying to keep Serge Gnabry

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the Gunners tried for a long time under his stewardship to keep Serge Gnabry at the club.

As per, Bein Sports, Wenger believes that his attempts were always doomed to be fruitless because the switch to Werder Bremen was made with an eventual move to Bayern Munich in mind.

He said: “We tried to extend [Gnabry‘s] contract for a very long time and I think that Bayern manipulated behind the scenes, that if he went to Bremen he would join Bayern after.

“He was always a very talented boy. We always thought we had a player who could achieve a lot. He came back from a very bad experience on loan at West Brom where his confidence was destroyed. I tried to rebuild him because I believed in him.”

TBR’s View – Wenger’s comments show he didn’t give up on Gnabry

It’s been easy for Arsenal fans to bemoan the departure of Gnabry, as if keeping the likes of Alex Iwobi around was some kind of binary choice instead.

But young players develop at different rates and perhaps Gnabry needed to go back to Germany to get his confidence up or play regularly.

Should Arsenal have given him more of a chance? It’s easy to say that now but young players’ development can be something of a lottery at times, and Wenger got it right more often than not.
