Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has stopped ‘running and putting tackles in’ since new deal

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s performances have dropped off since he signed his new £250,000-a-week Arsenal contract, according to former Tottenham striker Darren Bent.

The Gunners forward put pen to paper on a fresh three-year deal on September 15 to put an end to the speculation surrounding his future.

He scored in Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Fulham on the opening day of the season but since then has bagged one Premier League goal in nine matches. The 31-year-old has notched four goals in 12 matches in all competitions as Mikel Arteta’s side struggle for form.

And Bent has noticed a contrast in his displays since Aubameyang signed new terms earlier this season, claiming he is no longer ‘running, tracking back and putting tackles in’.

‘They [Arsenal] can’t get the best out of Aubameyang, he’s not playing well at all. But not only that as well, I know we keep talking about “we don’t create chances for him” but he’s got to do more himself as well,’ he told talkSPORT.

‘You can’t keep obviously blaming everyone else because he was superb up until he signed the contract and going well it can’t be his fault. We do need creativity in there, I understand that but he can still be doing a lot more for the team as well.

‘When you look at Aubameyang’s performances before he signed the contract, he was running after everything, he was tracking back, putting tackles in. People didn’t really speak about their creativity then because he was doing so much. He was going above and beyond so people expected that to continue.

‘He started against Fulham, superb again and got this contract and he just seems to have come away from it a little bit.

‘I understand that strikers go through patches in their career where you’re not quite scoring goals and confidence is low but you can still put effort in, work rate in and I think right now questions have to be asked.’

Arsenal suffered their fifth league defeat of the campaign on Sunday as they lost 2-1 to Wolves at home and manager Arteta admitted his ‘biggest concern’ is Aubameyang’s alarming slump in front of goal.

He hasn’t scored in open play since September 12 and on Sunday, he had just one shot on target and had only nine touches in Wolves’ penalty area.

Asked if he was worried, Arteta said: ‘I think we all are because the main goalscorer of the club at the moment isn’t scoring goals, so my biggest concern is how to help him score goals because we need his goals.

‘How important Auba has been for this club in the last two years and how the goal sheet has been shared among the squad tells you his importance.

‘He needs to be scoring goals if we want to be successful.’

Bent believes that doubts over whether he has ‘done the right thing’ in committing to the club have entered Aubameyang’s mind.

He added: ‘I would still say Arsenal are a little bit away from Champions League football so he’s probably questioning himself now, “have I done the right thing? Should I have signed this contract?” If your best player is performing like that then there’s some real concerns in this Arsenal squad.’

The Gunners are down in 14th in the table after picking up 13 points from 10 matches – their slowest start to a season since 1981.
