Arsenal boss Unai Emery pulled no punches in telling Shkodran Mustafi and Mohamed Elneny to leave the club for the sake of their careers – and fans love it!
Emery has told the pair they should try and find new clubs before the European transfer deadline on September 2 after insisting they are surplus to requirements.
The German defender and Egyptian midfielder have dropped down the pecking order at the Emirates recently and are unlikely to feature much in the first team.
Neither player has been part of a matchday squad this season, with new signings David Luiz and loanee Dani Ceballos now taking precedent.
“We have some players and they know their situation. For example, Elneny and Mustafi, they know their situation in the squad,” Emery said ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool on Saturday.
“I want the players to be happy here, I want the players to be protagonists here, and last year, for example, with Mustafi and Mo, when they didn’t play, they weren’t happy.
“I spoke with them a lot of times last year in this position and I think it is positive for them to leave and to sign for another team where they can be protagonists, they can be happy and can continue their careers as players.”
Mustafi played plenty of football in Emery’s first season in charge but has always polarised the opinion of supporters and has made plenty of mistakes.
He remains Arsenal‘s fifth most expensive signing – £35m from Valencia – but could leave in a cut-price deal in the coming days.
Elneny, who has also yet to feature following his return from the African Cup of Nations with Egypt, arrived from Basel in January 2016 but has never been able to hold down a regular place in the Arsenal midfield.
While Emery’s comments to the two players may seem harsh to many, they have gone down well with the Arsenal fans, who say it is good to see.
And many took to social media to speak out about the comments.
“That’s Unai speak for “mate just f**k off will you?” wrote one fan.
“Somehow it will be the only way,” said another.
While another Gunners fan said: “Ruthless from emery. Fair enough, no more Mr nice guy.”
“Much prefer a manager who is honest and open with the players,” said another.
“Holy s***. This looks legit. Me likes,” said another fan.
While one fan simply said: “Give Unai lifetime contract!”
