Mesut Ozil received another pep talk from Unai Emery the start of Arsenal‘s pre-season campaign last week.
And Emery’s latest message to his biggest player was a challenge to be ‘the best Mesut Ozil this season’ this year.
The relationship between Arsenal’s manager and star player was a major talking point last year though Ozil revealed this week that it is ‘a really good one.’
Mesut Ozil received another pep talk from Unai Emery during the club’s pre-season tour
When Emery admitted during the season that he likes to ‘provoke friction’ to try and get a reaction out of his players his treatment of Ozil started to make sense.
The untouchable status playmaker Ozil enjoyed under Arsene Wenger was no longer under his successor Emery.
Not helped by niggling knee and back problems, Ozil found himself marginalised, not trusted in away games or seemingly suited to the Spaniard’s philosophy. ‘I had a tough time,’ he admitted.
But by the end of the season something clicked and Ozil, 30, became a regular starter again. Now Emery is expecting big things.
Emery’s message to the playmaker was to be ‘the best Mesut Ozil this season’ this year
He said: ‘I spoke with him last week at the beginning of pre-season and wanted to get his best performance. The way to achieve that is with daily commitment.
‘He’s working very well and I’m very positive about his commitment. He has a high, high commitment today.
‘He’s one of the captains of the team with Granit Xhaka and Nacho Monreal. I’m looking forward to seeing the best Mesut Ozil this season.’
Ozil was keeping the precise details of exactly what Emery was demanding from him when he was reluctant to pick him close to his chest.

He said: ‘What we spoke about between me and the coach I can’t say, I can’t tell you because if I say something now to you, in the future he doesn’t want to speak to me again, so I have to take care of that!’ Whatever was said in their string of conversations, though, registered and Ozil welcomed Emery’s tough love.
‘I’ve had a lot of coaches in my career so of course every coach is different and wants something different from you as a player,’ he said.
‘I had a few injuries before last season started so of course I had a tough time but especially the end of the season I played a lot of games.
‘I have a really good relationship with the coach. We are speaking a lot and he wants to help me – I know that because he has a lot of experience – and I want to help the team.’
However, Ozil revealed this week that his relationship with Emery is ‘a really good one’
Now ‘really happy,’ fully fit and sticking around with his £350,000-per-week wages pricing him out of a move Arsenal would be open to to ease their hefty wage bill, Ozil is ready to accept Emery’s challenge.
‘I know what I can do on the pitch,’ he said. ‘I want to help the team and I think it will go well this season, for me and the team.
‘As an Arsenal player and Arsenal team we always have goals to win titles so hopefully we can win titles this season. Let’s see what happens at the end of the season.’
