Arsenal news: Ozil hits back at always being made the scapegoat for club’s big game failures

Mesut Ozil has hit back at always being made the scapegoat for Arsenal‘s big game failures.

The midfielder, who is on a contract worth £350,000 per week at the Emirates, has been frozen out by manager Unai Emery and has made just two appearances this season.

Ozil, who has started just one match this campaign, has his critics but has expressed in an interview with The Athletic that he believes some of the condemnation is not fair.

MESUT OZIL’S STATS FOR SEASON

Appearances: 2

Goals: 0

Assists:

‘If we don’t do well in a “big” game, it’s always my fault. If that’s true, how do you explain our results in the “big” games when I wasn’t involved? There’s no real difference,’ he told The Athletic

‘I know people expect me to offer more, dictate play and make the difference — I do, too — but it’s not that straightforward.

‘I’m not the only player in the team and, don’t forget, some of our opponents are simply better than us.’

Midfielder Ozil has his critics but he believes some of the condemnation is not fair

Ozil has fallen out of favour under Emery. Last season he was left out of several away matches and this term he has not been included in the Gunners’ last three league games.

The 31-year-old has, in fact, been left out of the squad entirely for the past three matches in all competitions – the trip to Manchester United and the home clashes against Standard Liege and Bournemouth.

‘When I decided he shouldn’t be in the squad it’s because I think other players deserved it more,’ Emery said after the Europa League victory over Standard Liege earlier this month.

Ozil was forced to miss the beginning of the season after himself and team-mate Sead Kolasinac were ambushed by attackers on mopeds in north west London and then due to ‘further security incidents’.

However the midfielder has cost Arsenal £19,718 for just 142 minutes on the pitch.
