Arsenal news: Injury boost as defender Holding plays 90 minutes for Under 23s

Rob Holding has given Arsenal a much-needed fitness boost as the defender played 90 minutes for the under-23’s in a 2-2 draw against Everton.

Provided he has emerged through the clash unscathed, Holding should be available for first-team selection for Arsenal’s clash against Watford on September 15 immediately after the international break.

Holding was given a 60-minute run out for Arsenal’s Under-23s’ defeat to Blackburn on August 12.

But Friday night’s comeback match represented a truer acid test with regards to whether he is ready to play senior football.

The news comes as a huge boost to manager Unai Emery, who relied heavily on Holding before he suffered a season-ending injury against Manchester United on December 5.

The Gunners didn’t lose a single one of the 16 games the 23-year-old played before his injury at Old Trafford.

His displays at the heart of Arsenal’s defence pushed Holding into England manager Gareth Southgate’s thoughts, and the former Bolton man will hope he can break into the senior international fold once he regains full fitness.

Meanwhile, the Gunners expect to have skipper Granit Xhaka available for Saturday’s crunch clash against Liverpool.

The Switzerland international missed Saturday’s win over Burnley with a back injury, but Emery hopes to have his key midfielder available for the trip to Anfield.
