Arsenal new boy Nicolas Pepe makes transfer revelation amid Liverpool interest

Nicolas Pepe insists he made the move to Arsenal because the club matched his ambitions.

The Ivory Coast international became the Gunners’ record signing after joining from Lille for £72m in the summer transfer window.

Bringing in the forward was seen as a real coup for the club after there had also been rumoured interest from the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United.

Reports in France claim both Liverpool and United made offers for Pepe, with Napoli also keen, but the forward decided Arsenal was the club for him.

Pepe came off the bench to make his debut in the win at Newcastle

The 24-year-old is yet to start a game for his new team, coming off the bench in their two Premier League wins against Newcastle and Burnley.

Pepe only trailed Lionel Messi last season for combined goals and assists out of Europe’s top five leagues and will be hoping to quickly make his mark.

And he is expected to build up a fearsome partnership with Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in attack once he gets his feet under the table at the Emirates.

Speaking about the move, Pepe said the choice to move to north London was very logical and reckons the club can match his ambition.

“I chose to come here because it’s a club with a lot of ambition,” Pepe told the club website.

“They have the dream of coming back to the Champions League and I am also an ambitious person, so the choice was very logical.

“I am attracted to the Premier League because it is an extremely intense championship and the best league in the world.

“The idea is to win the Europa League and that is a goal of ours. It’s a European event and our goal is to do better than last season. I believe we will.”

Arsenal travel to Liverpool this weekend with both sides unbeaten and Pepe explained how his new boss Unai Emery was key to helping him settle in at the London club.

“It’s been really good because he speaks French and it has been much easier for us to communicate,” he said.

“I am new, the strategy and tactics are new and it really helps that I can get the coach’s assistance.

“Now I need to learn English and this is something he is helping me with also.”
