Arsenal legend Alan Smith has been heaping praise on the club’s new recruits this week, ahead of a clash with another of his former teams Leicester City this weekend.
The former striker has been discussing the form of Gabriel Magalhaes, who he thinks could be vital in stopping the Foxes from securing a win this weekend.
The Brazilian arrived in a reported £27 million package deal from Lille, as reported by Sky Sports, the Gunners fighting off several other clubs across Europe to strengthen their defensive options.
Smith is clearly a fan of the player, who he believes is something of an ‘unsung hero’ for Arsenal already this season.
“I want to mention Gabriel, something of an unsung hero since arriving this summer,” Smith wrote in the London Evening Standard. “He is one of those central defenders you do not always notice, thanks to his positioning and anticipation. Because of that, he will often get his body in the way or head on the ball — something proper defenders always enjoy.
“A great athlete, he covers the ground beautifully, which should come in handy with Vardy around. And at 22, the Brazilian will only get better. The early signs suggest he will be around for a while.”
There is no doubt that Gabriel has shown himself to be a top talent for Arsenal and the fans are very appreciative of what he has brought to the Gunners defence.
Not only is Gabriel looking strong enough at the messy stuff to thrive in English football, but he is brilliant with the ball at his feet and has the sort of pace in defence that is needed in the modern era.
This weekend will be a huge test, as he faces off with one of the Premier League’s most lethal strikers, Jamie Vardy, should the former England international be fit after a calf problem.
If he can keep the Foxes striker quiet, then there is little doubt he has the raw materials at his disposal to be a potential Premier League star.
