Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has begun Arsenal’s season in fine form by scoring eight goal in eight games.
But Unai Emery’s decision to bring the striker on for the last 10 minutes of the Gunners’ Europa League game with Standard Liege caused looks of consternation around the Emirates.
Arsenal were already 4-0 up and cruising to victory thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s brace and goals from Joe Willock and Dani Ceballos.
Aubameyang was enjoying his younger team-mates’ performances and was seen joking with Alexandre Lacazette during the game.
Emery, however, decided that it would be worthwhile sending the Gabon star on to replace Reiss Nelson in the 79th minute.
“Can anyone tell me why @Aubameyang7 is on?????!!!!!!!!!!!” tweeted Arsenal hero David Seaman, clearly perplexed at the move.
The former Paris St-Germain manager offered no explanation after the game but Aubameyang suffered no injury worries and will be fit to start against Bournemouth.
Meanwhile, the star’s spat with his former club Borussia Dortmund rumbles on.
The Bundesliga club’s sporting director Michael Zorc, admitted he could not understand Aubameyang’s fierce reaction to
Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke’s comments.
The Arsenal man called Watzke a ‘clown’ after the 60-year-old suggested Aubameyang quit in January 2018 solely due to financial reasons.
“My feeling is that Auba took the wrong tone here and had the wrong choice of words,” said Zorc. “Hans-Joachim Watzke did not say anything bad and did not mean anything bad.
“In the time Auba was with us, during four-and-a-half years, we have always stood behind him even in difficult situations.
“In that sense, I cannot understand now why he’s had such a strong and exaggerated reaction.”
Aubameyang pointed out that Dortmund had been quick to take Barcelona’s money when they sold Ousmane Dembele to the La Liga champions for £93m.
The striker has been a huge hit since joining the Gunners for £56m from Dortmund, scoring 49 goals in 74 appearances.
